A partnership of nonprofit organizations and research institutions will launch a 5-year project conducting, promoting and disseminating AIDS and HIV research, according to a press release.

The Supporting Operational AIDS Research (SOAR) project is funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and led by the Population Council, an international nonprofit research group. Other project members are the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) — another nonprofit group specializing in HIV and AIDS programs — Johns Hopkins University, the University of North Carolina, the Futures Group, and Futures Institute.

“We are honored to join USAID, the Population Council and this group of skilled researchers as we continue our efforts to end AIDS in children through innovative research, advocacy and program implementation efforts,” Laura Guay, MD, vice president of research at EGPAF, said in the release. “SOAR will enhance our work to change the future for children, families and countries impacted by the AIDS epidemic.”

The global research project will evaluate how best to address challenges in the delivery of HIV and AIDS care, treatment and prevention services. Other goals include producing evidence supporting HIV prevention practices and implementing care programs worldwide.
