The 4-year grant was awarded to John E. Edwards, MD, and Ashraf S. Ibrahim, PhD, both of the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed), and will fund an ongoing clinical trial assessing the efficacy of a vaccine to protect patients from candidiasis.

The institute’s researchers will use samples from enrolled patients for a study to determine how the vaccine is working and how it could further increase protection from hospital-acquired infections.

“The development of a vaccine to protect people from these health care-related infections will be a major step forward in improving the health of people here in the US and around the globe,” David I. Meyer, PhD, president and CEO of LA BioMed, said in a press release.

“LA BioMed’s infectious disease specialists are creating a new generation of vaccines to combat these infections. Securing federal funding for such important studies is critical to advancing innovations and developing the medical breakthroughs needed to protect patient health,” he said.
