Multiple products with chia powder, seeds recalled for Salmonella contamination
An ongoing outbreak of Salmonella infections has been linked to products containing chia powder, according to the CDC.
As of Monday, there have been 21 confirmed cases of Salmonella infections in 12 states: 13 cases of S. newport, six cases of S. hartford and two cases of S. oranienburg. Two patients have been hospitalized. The Public Health Agency of Canada has also reported similar Salmonella outbreaks in several provinces.
The investigation traced the outbreak to assorted brands of organic sprouted chia powder. Laboratory testing isolated at least one of the outbreak strains from samples of leftover Navitas Naturals products containing the chia powder, which were taken from patients’ homes. In addition, two unopened Navitas Naturals products also contained outbreak strains.
Multiple recalls of various brands of products that contain chia powder and chia seeds have been issued by companies in the United States and in Canada. Information about the recalled products can be found at www.cdc.gov/salmonella/newport-05-14/advice-consumers.html.
