China reports 10 additional H7N9 cases

Health officials today confirmed an additional 10 cases of human infection with influenza A(H7N9) virus across three provinces in eastern China. Since Monday, 38 new cases have been reported to WHO.

To date, there have been a total of 219 H7N9 cases and 55 deaths related to the illness, according to WHO.

The latest cases occurred in patients aged 39 to 76 years and were reported from Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces. Most patients reported exposure to poultry. The patients remain in serious to critical conditions.

Human infection with H7N9 was first reported in March 2013. The source of the infection is still unclear. According to WHO, there has been no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus.
