Three more H7N9 cases reported in China

Health officials in China reported three more laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with influenza A(H7N9) virus.

Since March 2013, there have been 181 reported cases of H7N9 infection, including 52 deaths, according to WHO.

The most recent cases include a 29-year-old man from Hangzhou City in Zhejiang province who became ill Jan. 2. He was admitted to the hospital Jan. 12 and is reported to be in serious condition. The second patient is a 58-year-old man also from Hangzhou City. The patient has a history of exposure to poultry and became ill Jan. 6. He was hospitalized Jan. 12 and is in critical condition. The third patient, a 50-year-old man from Jinjiang City in Fujian province, also had been exposed to poultry. He became ill Jan. 5 and was hospitalized Jan. 11. He is in critical condition.

According to WHO, the source of the infection is still under investigation. No sustained human-to-human transmission of H7N9 has been reported.
