Chinese health officials reported six additional laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with influenza A(H7N9) virus and the death of a previously reported patient.

According to WHO, all of the most recent patients, aged 28 to 78 years, had a history of exposure to poultry. Their present conditions range from mild to critical. The cases were reported from Ningbo City in Zhejiang province, Yiwu City in Zhejiang province and Foshan City in Guangdong province.

The fatal case was identified as a 65-year-old man whose illness was reported last week by the Centre for Health Protection in Hong Kong. He died Monday. The patient had traveled to Guangdong province in China with a family member and was exposed to poultry. His illness is believed to have originated outside of Hong Kong.

Health officials are still investigating the source of the infection but said there has been no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission of H7N9.
