H7N9 case reported from Hong Kong
A 65-year-old man in Hong Kong tested positive for avian influenza A(H7N9) on Jan. 8, according to WHO.
The patient had traveled to Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China, with a family member between Jan. 1 and Jan. 2. An investigation indicated that both individuals had passed near “wet markets” in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, but health officials believe the infection occurred outside of Hong Kong.
The patient became ill Jan. 3 and was admitted to the hospital Jan. 7 with a respiratory infection. He was transferred to the ICU later that day and is currently in critical condition. His family member is asymptomatic but was placed under quarantine.
Since Jan. 4, Chinese health officials reported eight other cases of H7N9 infection, including a 51-year-old woman from Jiaxing City in Zhejiang province.
