Chinese health officials reported seven additional cases of infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, according to WHO. All but one of the patients are in critical condition.

The source of the infection is unclear, but there has yet been no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission.

Between Jan. 4 and Jan. 8, cases were reported from Shanghai City; Shaoxing City in Zhejiang province; Foshan City in Guangdong province; Yangjiang City in Guangdong province; Nanjing City in Jiangsu province; and Shenzhen City in Guangdong province. The patients’ ages range from 31 to 86 years. The only patient currently in stable condition is a 31-year-old male patient from Shenzhen City.

WHO presently does not recommend any travel or trade restrictions as a result of the outbreak.
