WHO reported another laboratory-confirmed case of human infection with Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus in the United Arab Emirates — a 33-year-old health care worker in Dubai.

The health care worker was in contact with another confirmed MERS case and developed symptoms Dec. 27. He was hospitalized the following day with bilateral pneumonia, acute renal failure and thrombocytopenia, according to WHO. The patient has a history of bronchial asthma and chronic kidney disease, and he is currently in critical but stable condition.

To date, there have been 177 cases of infection with MERS, including 74 deaths.

“Health care facilities are reminded of the importance of systematic implementation of infection prevention and control,” WHO stated. “Health care facilities that provide care for patients suspected or confirmed with MERS [coronavirus] infection should take appropriate measures to decrease the risk of transmission of the virus to other patients, health care workers and visitors.”
