Additional H7N9 cases reported in China

WHO reported two more laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus in China, according to a press release.
The first patient, aged 3 years, is from Guangdong province and had contact with live poultry. The boy became ill Oct. 29 and was hospitalized Oct. 31. He is now in stable condition.
The second patient is a farmer aged 64 years from Zhejiang province. She also had contact with poultry, becoming ill Oct. 30, and was hospitalized Oct. 31. She is in critical condition.
According to WHO, there have been 139 laboratory-confirmed cases of H7N9, including 45 deaths. Six patients are currently hospitalized with the infection and 88 patients have been discharged. To date, there has been no evidence of human-to-human transmission.
The health organization said the Chinese government is responding to the outbreak by increasing surveillance, communicating with the public about infection risk and conducting additional research, among other measures.
WHO has not recommended any travel or trade restrictions as a result of the outbreak.
