West Nile virus infections spreading in European, neighboring countries
West Nile virus infections continue to spread across the European Union and neighboring countries, with the total case count reaching more than 650, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
As of September 26, 190 human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in the EU and 464 cases in neighboring countries since the beginning of the 2013 transmission season, according to an ECDC press release.
Most recent data indicate that 23 new cases were detected in the EU during the week of Sept. 23.
Croatia reported three new cases; Greece reported three; Romania reported four; and Italy reported 13 new cases. The total of 59 reported cases from Italy includes 33 neuroinvasive cases and 26 non-neuroinvasive cases.
Twenty-eight new cases were reported in Serbia. The Bar region in Montenegro also has been identified as another possible place of infection for the already reported case there.
