Cyclospora outbreak affects more than 600 patients

The CDC is continuing to investigate the multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis, which has affected 610 patients. No deaths have been reported to the CDC.

On June 28, the CDC was notified of two laboratory-confirmed cases of Cyclospora infection in Iowa residents who had no history of international travel. As of Aug. 23, the infection has spread to 22 states: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

According to the CDC, it is unclear if the cases stem from the same outbreak. Most of the illness-onset dates ranged from mid-June to mid-July.

An FDA investigation has confirmed that the contaminated salad mix implicated in the outbreak was supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico, S. de R.L. de C.V., a processor of foodservice produce that has supplied salad mix to restaurants such as Olive Garden and Red Lobster in Iowa and Nebraska. The company voluntarily suspended its production of the salad mix.
