Rubella outbreaks confirmed in Japan, Poland

Travel alerts have been issued for Japan and Poland after ongoing outbreaks of rubella, according to the CDC.

Since the beginning of 2013, more than 26,000 cases of rubella have been reported in Poland and more than 8,500 laboratory-confirmed cases in Japan.

All of Poland is affected, but the Western region has the most cases.

In Japan, most cases have been reported in Osaka, Tokyo, Kanagawa prefecture and Kagoshima prefecture. Spring and summer are the peak periods of rubella in Japan. According to CDC, reported cases have increased during the past couple of months and are expected to continue rising.

CDC recommends that anyone traveling to these areas protect themselves by being up-to-date on the rubella vaccine. Pregnant women who are not protected through previous vaccination or infection should avoid traveling to the areas, especially during the first 20 weeks of pregnancy.
