WHO: Additional MERS cases in Saudi Arabia

The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia reported three more laboratory-confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, coronavirus, including one death, according to WHO.

Perspective from Ellen R. Wald, MD

The first two patients are a 45-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman from Taif governorate. Both patients had pre-existing medical conditions and are in critical condition. The third patient was a 46-year-old man from Wadi al-Dawasir. He became ill on May 29 and has died.

As of Friday, WHO reported a total of 61 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS, including 34 deaths. Unofficial reports indicate additional infections, bringing the total number of MERS cases to 64, including 38 deaths.

According to WHO, the following countries in the Middle East have been affected by MERS: Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Laboratory-confirmed cases also have been reported in France, Germany, Italy, Tunisia and the United Kingdom, and were likely transferred there for care or had returned from the Middle East where they became infected with the virus. There have been reports in France, Italy, Tunisia and the United Kingdom of local transmission of MERS among patients who have not traveled to the Middle East, but these patients were in close contact with laboratory-confirmed or probable cases.

WHO has not issued any travel or trade restrictions. It encourages health care providers to remain vigilant and all member states to assess and report any new cases of infection with MERS.
