The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has notified WHO of an additional laboratory-confirmed case of Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, coronavirus, in that country. Since September, the total number of cases worldwide is 55, including 31 deaths.

The patient is a 83-year-old man with underlying medical conditions who became ill May 27 and died May 31. The patient is from Al-Ahsa, where an outbreak began in a health care facility since April.

WHO also recently reported two new laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS in Italy, a 2-year-old girl and a 42-year-old woman. The patients are in stable condition. Both patients were in close contact with a laboratory-confirmed patient who recently traveled to Jordan.

So far, the virus has been reported in Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy, Tunisia and the United Kingdom.
