The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has notified WHO of two more laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with the novel coronavirus. Since September, there have been 33 cases of human infection with the novel coronavirus and 18 deaths.
The first patient, aged 48 years, had multiple coexisting medical conditions, according to WHO. He became ill on April 29 and is currently in stable condition. The second patient, aged 58 years and who also had coexisting medical conditions, became ill on April 6. The second patient is fully recovered and was discharged from the hospital.
Both cases were part of the same cluster reported in the beginning of this month, which was traced to an outbreak at a health care facility. The Saudi Arabia government is conducting an investigation into the outbreak. In May, there have been 15 human cases of coronavirus stemming from this outbreak and seven deaths.
“WHO encourages all Member States to continue their surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections and to carefully review any unusual patterns,” according to a WHO press release. “Health care providers are advised to be vigilant among recent travelers returning from areas affected by the virus who develop [severe acute respiratory infections]. Specimens from patients’ lower respiratory tracts should be obtained for diagnosis where possible.”
