CDC reflects on the purpose of annual HIV Testing Day

June 27 marks the 19th annual National HIV Testing Day — an annual campaign coordinated by the National Association of People with AIDS.

The purpose of the day is to promote HIV testing to detect, treat and prevent HIV infection. Reporting in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the CDC said, “HIV testing is the essential entry point to health care and social services that improve the quality of life and survival for persons who learn that they HIV.”

Those who know their HIV status can receive appropriate treatment and reduce the chance of transmitting the virus to others. The CDC recommended in 2006 that people aged 13 to 64 years be screened for HIV, and those with increased risk for HIV should be retested annually.
