WHO: Worldwide influenza A (H1N1) deaths now top 1,100

Throughout the world, 1,154 people have died from influenza A (H1N1) since the outbreak began in April, according to new data released by WHO yesterday.

The latest data also indicate that the number of worldwide laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) was 162,380. However, WHO officials said this number is assumed to be significantly higher, since in many countries, individual cases are no longer being tested or reported.

The total number of countries that have now reported at least one confirmed case of influenza A (H1N1) is now 168.

Although all continents have been affected by the influenza A (H1N1) outbreak and the virus has spread throughout the globe at unprecedented rapidity, the majority of deaths have occurred in the Western Hemisphere. According to WHO data, 1,008 deaths were reported in North America or South America.
