Iraq confirms first cases of influenza A (H1N1)

Seven members of the Iraq women’s national basketball team have been hospitalized for the treatment of influenza A (H1N1).

According to information from the Iraq Health Ministry, these patients represent the country’s first known cases of influenza A (H1N1). The cases were confirmed in the Health Ministry’s central laboratory.

The basketball players had been playing in a championship tournament in Chicago and had returned to Iraq on June 20.

Six of the players are receiving treatment in Iraqi hospitals. The seventh player, who was discovered to have influenza A (H1N1) when the team passed through Jordan on its way back to Iraq, is being treated in a Jordan hospital.

All seven patients are in good condition, according to information from the Iraq Health Ministry.
