Anabolic steroids were the most common cause of drug-induced liver injury among patients with heavy alcohol consumption, according to a recently published study. However, heavy alcohol consumption did not correlate with worse outcomes compared with nondrinkers.
Herbal, dietary supplement-induced liver injury more common in young women
Analysis of the Spanish Drug-Induced Liver Injury registry showed that cases of herbal and dietary supplement-induced liver injury were more common in young women than older patients or men and correlated with hepatocellular injury and high levels of transaminases.
Acetaminophen-induced liver injury, failure more common in women
Acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury and failure are more common in women than men, according to recently published data. Women also have greater critical care needs and have an increased risk for severe hepatic encephalopathy, potentially related to increased use of sedatives.
Extracorporeal cellular therapy unsuccessful in treating alcoholic hepatitis
A recent trial of extracorporeal cellular therapy for severe alcoholic hepatitis did not achieve its primary or secondary endpoints of increased survival compared with standard of care, but did verify that high creatinine and international normalized ratio among those who received the treatment predicted negative outcomes.
Alternative scoring systems improve alcoholic hepatitis prognosis
Three existing prognostic scoring systems evaluated in the Steroids or Pentoxifylline for Alcoholic Hepatitis trial, or STOPAH, demonstrated improved identification of poor prognosis in patients with alcoholic hepatitis over the commonly used Discriminant Function.
