CHICAGO — Grace Elta, MD, was announced as new chair of the Digestive Disease Week council, according to an announcement at the end of Digestive Disease Week 2014.

Elta replaces Lawrence S. Friedman, MD, who held the position for 6 years. The Digestive Disease Week council, which governs the meeting, includes a chair, chair-elect, secretary/treasurer and a leader from each sponsoring society.

“I am honored to become chair of the DDW council,” Elta, professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Health System, said in the release. “After being involved in creating and identifying programs, presenting during and attending DDW for many years, I am looking forward to playing an integral role in directing the future of the meeting.

“At a time when there are so many new methods health-care professionals can use to continue their education, it is more important than ever to provide new, fresh programming ideas to keep medical meetings, like DDW, relevant.”

Friedman, chair of the department of medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton, Mass., believes DDW will continue to be steered in the right direction under Elta.

“Under the capable guidance of Dr. Elta, DDW will continue to offer exciting research, new programs and professional interaction for all health-care professionals with an interest in digestive diseases,” Friedman said in the release.
