National Hispanic Heritage Month: Experts work to address disparities in medicine

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed every Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
The campaign is designed to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture on the nation’s achievements, culture and history.
In conjunction with this observance, Healio provides the following updates on the ongoing efforts of women in oncology working to address disparities faced by Latinas in medicine.
1. Female immigrant and Puerto Rican minority medical graduates experienced racial/ethnic and gender discrimination in the U.S. at higher rates than their male counterparts. Read more.
2. The U.S. has witnessed an uptick in the number of minority medical school matriculants in recent years, but action to retain and grow a diverse medical workforce remains scarce. Read more.
3. Latinas in medicine reported high rates of discrimination and mental health struggles, especially during medical training. Read more.
4. Representation of immigrant and Puerto Rican minority medical graduates has increased in the U.S.; however, they continue to experience frequent discrimination. Read more.
