Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, FASCO, will receive the Joseph Simone Quality Care Award and Lecture at this year’s ASCO Quality Care Symposium, scheduled for Sept. 27-28.

The award recognizes significant and enduring contributions to the quality and safety of cancer care.

Ethan Basch, MD, MSc, FASCO

Basch is physician-in-chief at North Carolina Cancer Hospital and chief of oncology at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as distinguished professor of medicine and health policy, and director of the cancer outcomes research program.

"Dr. Basch has dedicated his career to ensuring the delivery of high-quality cancer care for all patients," Raymond U. Osarogiagbon, FACP, MBBS, FASCO, chair of the ASCO Quality Care Symposium planning committee, said in a press release. “Thanks to dedicated professionals like him, we will continue to develop innovative solutions to cancer care delivery problems.”

Basch helped develop NCI’s PRO-CTCAE, a widely used system that collects patient-reported adverse events.

Basch and his team established that patient-reported outcome surveys significantly improve the detection of symptomatic adverse events during clinical trials.

Basch and his collaborators also showed that electronic symptom monitoring and notifying members of the care team if concerning symptoms arise can extend survival, reduce hospitalization and improve quality of life.
