Ohio State names new medical oncology director

Christian Rolfo, MD, PhD, MBA, will be the director of the division of medical oncology at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center — Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, as of Aug. 15.
Through the appointment, Rolfo will also serve as a professor in the department of internal medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and associate director for the cancer center’s early-phase clinical trials.
“Dr. Rolfo is internationally recognized as an accomplished physician and researcher,” Rama Mallampalli, MD, professor and chair of the department of internal medicine at The Ohio State University, said in a press release. “His leadership and many contributions to the field of oncology make him an excellent fit for the OSUCCC – James. We are delighted to welcome him to Ohio State.”
Rolfo is currently a professor in the division of hematology and medical oncology and at the Institute for Translational Epidemiology in Cancer at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He is also the associate director of clinical research for the Center of Excellence for Thoracic Oncology at Mount Sinai’s Tisch Cancer Institute.
His laboratory work has focused on liquid biopsy analytes, exosomes and cell-free DNA, according to the release. Rolfo’s research has helped identify the frequency of EGFR mutations in non-small cell lung cancer among white individuals.
He is also the president of the International Society of Liquid Biopsy, deputy chair of the education committee at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer and editor-in-chief of Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology.
Rolfo obtained his medical degree at the University of Cordoba School of Medicine in Argentina and completed his fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Milan, after which he earned his doctorate and Doctor Europaeus in clinical oncology and experimental research at the University of Palermo in Italy.
He also has an MBA in hospital and health services management and organization from the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain.
