ASCO to honor Smita Bhatia, MD, MPH, FASCO, for contributions to cancer control, prevention

Smita Bhatia, MD, MPH, FASCO, will be awarded the 2024 ASCO-American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Award during the American Society for Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The award recognizes ASCO members who have made a significant contribution to cancer prevention and control research or practice.

Bhatia, the Gay and Bew White endowed professor in pediatric oncology at University of Alabama at Birmingham, previously served as founding chair of the department of population sciences at City of Hope from 2006 to 2014. She later joined University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2015 to establish the Institute for Cancer Outcomes and Survivorship.

“I am humbled to be selected as the 2024 recipient of the ASCO-ACS Cancer Prevention Award,” Bhatia told Healio. “Throughout my life, I have been incredibly fortunate to have wonderful mentors, and I owe this recognition to them.”

Bhatia is an associate editor for Journal of Clinical Oncology; senior editor for Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention; an elected member of American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians; and a past ASCO board member.
