VIDEO: Risk for distant rectal cancer regrowth drastically greater after local recurrence
In this video, Afsaneh Barzi, MD, PhD, discussed research that examined the risks when using a watch-and-wait approach for rectal cancer.
The study, presented at ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium showed that for patients who experienced local regrowth of their rectal cancer, the likelihood of distant recurrent disease was significantly higher.
"In an analysis to identify what factors actually contribute to this distant recurrent disease, local regrowth was the most important factor — perhaps the main contributor," Barzi, a medical oncologist at City of Hope, said.
