The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center tops U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-2024 Best Hospitals rankings for cancer care.

This is the ninth straight year — and the 19th time in 22 years — that MD Anderson has ranked first. The institution has finished first or second in cancer care every year since the publication began issuing its rankings in 1990.

“At MD Anderson, we remain singularly focused on eliminating cancer,” Peter WT Pisters, MD, president of MD Anderson, said in a press release. “We are pleased to see this commitment recognized, but there is work still to be done. Collectively, we have aligned our efforts around three key strategic themes – reach, breakthroughs and value – to deliver exceptional cancer care to more people, accelerate groundbreaking discoveries, and deliver an unmatched, high-quality patient experience.”

Other hospitals ranked in the top 10 for cancer care are Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; UCLA Medical Center; Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center; Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania — Penn Presbyterian; UCSF Health — UCSF Medical Center; City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center; Johns Hopkins Hospital; and Cleveland Clinic.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital ranked first in this year’s Honor Roll, which highlights 22 hospitals that deliver exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care.

Other institutions in this year’s Honor Roll top 10 are Brigham and Women's Hospital; Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; Cleveland Clinic; Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania — Penn Presbyterian; Houston Methodist Hospital; Johns Hopkins Hospital; Massachusetts General Hospital; Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Mayo Clinic had topped the Honor Roll for the previous 7 years.

The 34th annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings are intended to help patients with rare or life-threatening conditions make informed decisions about where to receive care. The rankings compare hospitals in 15 medical specialties, including cancer, cardiology, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, orthopedics and urology.

“A recent survey of U.S. News users revealed more than four in five (84%) consider a hospital’s quality metrics to be important factors when deciding where to seek treatment for a serious medical issue,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a press release. “Consumers want useful resources to help them assess which hospital can best meet their specific care needs. The 2023-2024 Best Hospitals rankings offer patients and the physicians with whom they consult a data-driven source for comparing performance in outcomes, patient satisfaction and other metrics that matter to them.”

In June, U.S. News & World Report released its rankings of Best Children’s Hospitals. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center ranked as the No. 1 children’s hospital for cancer in the country.
