CHICAGO — ChatGPT can be used to develop next-generation sequencing reports that outline treatment strategies for patients who have non-small cell lung cancer with driver oncogenes, according to results presented at ASCO Annual Meeting.

Investigators from University of Illinois Cancer Center characterized the recommendation relevance as moderate and accuracy as limited (46%, 95% CI, 40.2-51.8). They also noted high variability across NSCLC oncogenes.

However, researchers concluded the recommendations appeared promising, considering the complex nature of the process and the fact no training had been provided to the artificial intelligence platform. Large language model AI platforms may generate more accurate and relevant reports as they mature, investigators added.

Healio spoke with Zacharie Hamilton, a third-year medical student at University of Illinois School of Medicine, about the study results and their implications.
