An oncology financial navigation intervention decreased financial toxicity among patients with blood cancers and their caregivers, according to study results.

The intervention — called Coverage and Cost-of-Care Links (CC Links) — also received high ratings for acceptability and appropriateness, findings showed.

The analysis included patients who presented to the division of hematology and bone marrow transplant at University of Kentucky’s Markey Cancer Center between April 2021 and January 2022. Those who screened positive for financial toxicity could participate in the intervention, which offered financial navigation and assistance.

Eighty-six participants — 54 patients and 32 caregivers — completed pre- and post-intervention surveys.

CC Links significantly reduced Comprehensive Score for financial toxicity for both patients and caregivers, findings published in JCO Oncology Practice showed. The intervention also reduced total financial toxicity for caregivers and secured an average of $2,500 worth of financial benefits per participant.

Healio spoke with researcher Jean S. Edward, PhD, RN, associate professor and assistant dean for diversity, equity and inclusion at UK College of Nursing, about the findings and their potential implications.
