In a video interview, Benjamin Schlechter, MD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, spoke about two presentations on using radiation palliatively presented at ASCO Gastrointestinal Cancers Symposium.
One presentation discussed using radiosurgery to the celiac plexus for pain management in pancreatic cancer, and another discussed using radiotherapy to the liver to mitigate pain from symptomatic disease.
Schlechter said that these trials help not only manage the toxicity of the cancers, but also mitigate suffering for patients.
“Two presentations showing that we can mitigate suffering with radiotherapy safely and effectively I think is really important, and I hope to see a lot more of that,” Schlechter said.
