Keith Hoots, MD, received ASH’s Outstanding Service Award.
The award recognizes individuals in the public or private sector who displayed effective behind-the-scenes leadership in relevant missions pertaining to ASH.
Hoots — former director of the division of blood diseases and resources at NHLBI — received the award in recognition of his advocacy of hematology research and clinical care.
“Under the leadership of Dr. Hoots, the division of blood diseases and resources has continued to be a leader in research on the causes, prevention and treatment of non-neoplastic blood diseases through the launch of efforts such as the Cure Sickle Cell Initiative and the development of programs to support the workforce in classical hematology,” ASH President Jane N. Winter, MD, professor of medicine at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and member of Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, said in an ASH-issued press release.
Hoots worked at University of Texas Medical School at Houston before joining NHLBI in 2009. He retired from NHLBI in 2022.
He had been an active member of ASH for more than 4 decades, serving as a champion for classical hematology and a crucial resource to ASH on various other issues that impact hematology research, according to the release.
