Several forms of integrative medicine can effectively relieve pain caused by cancer and its treatments, according to study results.
These approaches — which include acupuncture, massage, hypnosis or reflexology — may be more beneficial for certain patients based on the type of pain they are experiencing and the reasons for it, a collaborative study conducted by Society for Integrative Oncology and ASCO showed.
The study — the first meta-analysis to examine natural, nonpharmacologic approaches to treat cancer pain — resulted in development of guidelines published in Journal of Clinical Oncology.
Healio spoke with researcher Jun Mao, MD, chief of the integrative medicine service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, about the importance of the study and the implications of the findings.
