The Kidney Cancer Association posthumously presented Nicholas J. Vogelzang, MD, FACP, FASCO, with a new award named in his honor.

The inaugural Kidney Cancer Association Nicholas J. Vogelzang Humanitarian Award — named after the association’s co-founder and long-serving board member — recognizes a person who has helped highlight kidney cancer advocacy and made efforts to increase awareness and provide resources to advance treatment of kidney cancer and improve patient care.

Vogelzang — a former HemOnc Today Editorial Board member — died in September at age 72 years. His wife, Diane, accepted the award on behalf of her husband during this year’s International Kidney Cancer Symposium: North America.

“Improved outcomes for his patients drove him every single day,” Diane Vogelzang said in a press release.

Vogelzang, a genitourinary oncologist who specialized in treatment of rare cancers, most recently served as medical oncologist with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada. He previously served as director of Nevada Cancer Institute, as well as director of University of Chicago Cancer Research Center.

“Nick was an extraordinary example of the beautiful difference one life can make,” Gretchen E. Vaughan, president and CEO of Kidney Cancer Association, said in the release. “He saw a need and co-founded the Kidney Cancer Association when people had no resources in the kidney space. Such an incredible doctor but, more importantly, the kindest man, biggest heart, and gentlest soul. We are all better for knowing him.”

Bradley C. Leibovich, MD, urologic oncologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and chair of Kidney Cancer Association’s board of directors, called Vogelzang “a giant in GU medical oncology.”

“He distinguished himself by always going above and beyond for his patients and colleagues with compassion and seemingly endless energy and enthusiasm,” Leibovich said in the release.

The award in Vogelzang’s honor will be presented annually at International Kidney Cancer Symposium: North America.
