Andrew Ciupek, PhD, spoke with Healio about real-world barriers to clinical trial enrollment for patients with lung cancer in the United States.

Ciupek, associate director of clinical research at GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer and co-author of the study, presented the findings at the World Conference on Lung Cancer.

“We know that clinical trial enrollment is low in the United States and a lot of other places,” he said. “We want to better understand from both a patient perspective and from a clinical perspective what some of the barriers may be to getting patients on clinical trials.”

The retrospective analysis utilized real-world clinical data from two sources — the 2020 annual GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer’s Centers of Excellence survey and a survey of patients who received clinical trial navigation through GO2’s LungMATCH program in 2020 and 2021.

According to Ciupek, increasing opportunities for local clinical trials in community settings may be one way to improve enrollment.
