Koen van Besien, MD, PhD, has been appointed chief of the division of hematology at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center.

He also will serve as director of Wesley Center for Immunotherapy, which generates chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies, natural killer cell therapies and other cellular-based therapies.

His appointment is effective July 15.

Van Besien is recognized for his contributions to the fields of cell therapy and stem cell transplantation. His group reported the first successful transplant for a patient with HIV and leukemia using a haplo-cord graft. The patient has remained HIV- and leukemia-free for more than 4 years after transplant.

He previously served as director of the stem cell transplant program and attending physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, as well as professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Van Besien served on the faculty of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also has directed transplant programs at University of Illinois and The University of Chicago.
