Fox Chase, Temple Health announce faculty appointments

Fox Chase Cancer Center and Temple Health announced several faculty appointments.

The appointments encompass specialties such as breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and urologic oncology.

Nina Burbure, MD, PhD, has been appointed assistant professor in the department of radiation oncology at Fox Chase.

Burbure’s research interests include treatment selection in hypopharynx cancer, patient-reported quality of life after prostate cancer therapy, and management of treatment delays in lung cancer.

Burbure completed her internal medicine internship at Temple University Hospital and radiation oncology residency at Fox Chase. She also previously taught at St. Joseph’s College and New York City College of Technology.

Joshua Cohn, MD, FPMRS, has joined Temple Health and the Fox Chase division of urology and urologic oncology.

Cohn previously served as attending physician in urology for Tennessee Valley Healthcare System within the Department of Veteran Affairs. He has been both an adjunct assistant professor of urologic oncology at Fox Chase and assistant professor of urology for Einstein Healthcare Network since 2017. He also served as associate fellowship director for genitourinary and reconstructive surgery for the Einstein Healthcare Network.

Cohn specializes in female pelvic medicine and reconstruction.

Justin Friedlander, MD, has joined Temple Health and the Fox Chase division of urology and urologic oncology.

Friedlander specializes in the treatment of kidney and ureteral stones. He also performs prostate enucleation for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Friedlander has served as adjunct associate professor of urologic oncology for Fox Chase since 2014. He previously served as director of endourology and the Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center for Einstein Healthcare Network.

Eric M. Ghiraldi, DO, has joined Temple Health and the Fox Chase division of urology and urologic oncology.

Ghiraldi specializes in benign prostatic hyperplasia treatment.

His research interests include metabolic management for kidney stone disease and treatment options for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

He previously served as clinical instructor for the department of endourology at Yale University, as well as associate professor of urology for Einstein Healthcare Network.

Saba Shaikh, MD, has been appointed assistant professor in the department of hematology/oncology at Fox Chase, where she will help care for patients with gastrointestinal or breast cancers.

Shaikh’s research interests include development of novel therapeutic strategies for patients with solid tumors who have become resistant to immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Shaikh received her undergraduate degree in neuroscience from University of Texas at Dallas. She received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency at Northwestern University’s McGaw Medical Center. She moved on to a hematology/oncology fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she served as chief fellow in her final year.

Jay Simhan, MD, FACS, has been appointed professor and director of reconstructive urology in the division of urology and urologic oncology.

He also will serve as fellowship director for the Fox Chase Reconstructive Urology fellowship.

Simhan is recognized for his expertise in reconstructive urology and urologic prosthetics. He specializes in advanced perineal and abdominal reconstruction.

Simhan previously held several leadership positions with Einstein Healthcare Network, including program director for the urologic residency program, chief of urology at Einstein Montgomery, and vice chair of the urology department for the health system.

Steve Sterious, MD, FACS, has joined Temple Health and the Fox Chase division of urology and urologic oncology.

Sterious is recognized for his expertise in urological conditions, including advanced benign prostatic hyperplasia, urinary tract infection, erectile dysfunction, kidney stones and incontinence. His specialties include minimally invasive and robotic surgery, kidney stone surgery, and erectile dysfunction and hypogonadism.

He previously served as a urologist for Einstein Medical Center.

Vanessa B. Wookey, MD, has been appointed assistant professor in the gastrointestinal cancer program at Fox Chase.

Wookey has held various teaching and leadership positions at South Dakota State University and University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Wookey received her undergraduate degree in biology from South Dakota State University. She received her medical degree from Sanford School of Medicine at The University of South Dakota and completed an internal medicine residency at University of Nebraska Medical Center.

She completed her hematology/oncology fellowship at University of Tennessee Health Science Center, as well as an advanced gastrointestinal oncology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
