American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy presented awards to three leaders in the fields.

Society representatives presented the awards during the ASTCT Tandem Meetings | Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Meetings of ASTCT and CIBMTR, held April 23-26 in Salt Lake City.

Effie Petersdorf

Effie Petersdorf, MD, received the ASTCT Lifetime Achievement Award.

Petersdorf is professor in the clinical research division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, as well as professor of medicine in the medical oncology division at University of Washington School of Medicine.

Petersdorf’s research has focused on the immunogenetics of the HLA system in transplantation.

Damiano Rondelli, MD
Damiano Rondelli

Damiano Rondelli, MD, received the ASTCT Public Service Award.

Rondelli is Michael Reese professor of hematology, chief of the division of hematology/oncology and director of bone marrow transplantation at University of Illinois at Chicago.

Rondelli leads a global initiative intended to improve access and resources for transplant and cellular therapy centers, particularly in countries with limited resources. The initiative has helped hospitals in Ukraine, Cuba and Nepal.

The ASTCT board of directors recognized James W. Young, MD, with this year’s ASTCT Special Recognition for his contributions to the New Investigator Awards program.

Young has led the New Investigator Awards application, review and selection process for the past decade. More than 50 individuals received funding through the program during that time.
