Kathleen Shannon Dorcy, PhD, RN, FAAN, received this year’s Connie Henke Yarbro Excellence in Cancer Nursing Mentorship Award.

The award — named after a founding member of Oncology Nursing Society and Oncology Nursing Foundation — recognizes and supports excellence in oncology nursing mentorship.

She began her oncology nursing career working in pediatric bone marrow transplantation at Fred Hutch. She later moved into clinical research, coordinating early-phase studies of monoclonal antibodies. She also has taught at University of Washington Tacoma.

Individuals who nominated Shannon Dorcy praised her unique ability to recognize the potential in others, as well as her efforts to ensure that potential becomes reality.

“The Foundation is delighted to recognize Kathleen for her caring investment in the career development of many oncology nurses whom she has mentored,” Tracy Gosselin, PhD, RN, AOCN, NEA-BC, FAAN, president of Oncology Nursing Foundation, said in a press release.

Shannon Dorcy received the award during this year’s Oncology Nursing Society Congress, held in April in Anaheim, California.

“As an oncology nurse for more than 30 years, I am most honored to be selected for this meaningful, prestigious award, as Connie Henke Yarbro has been an exemplar for me in my career,” Shannon Dorcy said in the release. “My heart is deeply touched that my wonderful colleagues collaborated to make this nomination possible. To be held in such kind respect by these experts in oncology is a most gracious and cherished professional gift to me in my career.”
