VIDEO: Mentor support key for oncology nurse practitioners in first year of practice
In this video, Victoria Krogg, APRN, CNP, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, discussed the effectiveness of a mentorship program for new nurse practitioners and new physician assistants in an oncology fellowship.
The research, discussed at the Oncology Nursing Society Congress 2022, looked at the nurse-to-nurse practitioner and student-to-clinician transitions, intent to stay in the role in the future, and feelings of support.
"The most significant finding was that generally all the scores improved from beginning to end," Krogg said.
In the nurse practitioner role transition scale, Krogg said one item did decrease — subjects reported having a feeling of lack of support — which Krogg said could potentially be due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic during the study’s timeframe.
"The evidence shows that new nurse practitioners and new physician assistants need support in some way, shape or form during their first year of practice," Krogg said.
