In the second installment of a four-video series timed to Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Maurie Markman, MD, spoke with Healio about the impact of HPV vaccination on the global burden of cervical cancer.

Trial data have showed vaccination prevents up to 99% of cervical cancer precursor lesions, according to Markman, president of medicine and science at Cancer Treatment Centers of America and a HemOnc Today Editorial Board member.

More recent data from Sweden, Great Britain and the United States — including a study published last year in JAMA Pediatrics — showed a reduction in cervical cancer already is being seen.

“It’s real, and it’s very easy to document,” Markman said.
