Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute appoints president
Michael Diaz, MD, has been named president and managing physician of Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute.
Diaz’s appointment will take effect Jan. 1, 2022.
Diaz, past president of Community Oncology Alliance, joined Florida Cancer Specialists in 2011. He provides care at two office locations in St. Petersburg. He has served as assistant managing physician for the statewide practice since November 2018 and as the practice’s director of patient advocacy for 7 years.

“Through his compassionate delivery of cancer care and his involvement in research, advocacy and philanthropic initiatives, [Diaz] works tirelessly to ensure that [patients with cancer] in the Tampa Bay region and across Florida and the U.S. have ready access to affordable, high-quality cancer care in their local communities,” Nathan H. Walcker, CEO of Florida Cancer Specialists, said in a press release. “He is ideally suited to fill this executive leadership role and lead our practice forward.”
Diaz succeeds Lucio Gordan, MD, who served as president and managing physician since 2018. Gordan will continue to practice as a medical oncologist at FCS Gainesville Cancer Center. He also will serve as chief medical officer of therapeutics and analytics for the statewide practice.

“The achievements we have made over the last 3 years under Dr. Gordan’s leadership have been very substantial, practice-transforming and enhancing,” Walcker said. “We are stronger than ever in all measurable aspects and we are grateful that Dr. Gordan will continue to contribute to future successes and innovations in this newly created leadership role.”
