Alex A. Adjei, MD, PhD, FACP, received the 2021 ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award — presented during this year’s virtual European Society for Medical Oncology Congress — recognizes Adjei’s contributions to drug development.

His work has focused on evaluating mechanisms of drug action and synergistic drug combinations in the laboratory, and he also has performed phase 1 trials in the clinic.

Adjei is professor of oncology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He also is director of the early cancer therapeutics program and director of global oncology at Mayo Clinic’s sites in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida.

Adjei gave a keynote lecture at ESMO titled “Flying blind: An odyssey in oncology drug development.”
