Oncology Nursing Foundation awarded $300,000 worth of grants for oncology nurse-led research into cancer health disparities.

Three grantees will receive $100,000 each.

Sally Maliski, PhD, RN, FAAN, of University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute will lead a team studying androgen deprivation therapy among Black men.

Natasha Schaefer Solle, PhD, RN

Natasha Schaefer Solle, PhD, RN, of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will lead a team studying the utilization of a culturally tailored nurse coaching intervention to reduce symptom severity and prevent dehydration among people with metastatic cancer.

Karen E. Wickersham, PhD, RN, of University of South Carolina College of Nursing will lead a team of researchers that will examine disparities in the utilization of oral targeted therapies for treatment of breast, colorectal and lung cancers among adults in South Carolina.

“The knowledge generated by nurse-led research is essential to clinical innovation and advancing cancer care for vulnerable populations,” Anizia Karmazyn, executive director of the Oncology Nursing Foundation, said in a press release. “We are grateful for the support of corporate partners — Genentech, A Member of the Roche Group, Incyte Corporation, and Bristol Myers Squibb — whose contributions to the foundation are providing the means to fund more research in key areas of need.”

Oncology Nursing Society created Oncology Nursing Foundation in 1981. The foundation has awarded more than $29 million in funding since its inception for oncology nursing education, research and leadership development.
