Association honors thoracic oncology specialists with distinguished service awards

The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, or IASLC, announced the recipients of its distinguished service awards.
The awards, presented in conjunction with the World Conference on Lung Cancer, honor those who have made major contributions to the field of thoracic oncology.
The recipients are:
Alex A. Adjei, MD, PhD, professor of oncology and pharmacology at Mayo College of Medicine, and director of the early cancer therapeutics program and leader of the lung cancer program at all three Mayo Clinic sites, received the Adi F. Gadzar IASLC Merit Award. Adjei has focused his career on oncology drug development and mentoring of next-generation cancer specialists.
Caroline Dive, CBE, PhD, FBPhS, FMedSci, director of the CRUK Manchester Institute Cancer Biomarker Centre at University of Manchester and president of the European Association for Cancer Research, received the Mary J. Matthews Pathology/Translational Research Award. The award acknowledges Dive’s lifetime achievement in pathology and translational research of thoracic malignancies.
Joan H. Schiller, MD, FASCO, adjunct professor at University of Virginia, former division chief of hematology/oncology at The University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center and former deputy director of Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, received the Paul A. Bunn Jr. Scientific Award. Schiller, who also is founder and president of the national advocacy organization Free to Breathe, has worked to eliminate the stigma of a lung cancer diagnosis and raise awareness of lung cancer incidence among women.
Pan-Chyr Yang, MD, PhD, chair professor at National Taiwan University Hospital and academician of Academia Sinica in Taiwan, received the Joseph W. Cullen Prevention/Early Detection Award, honoring his lifetime achievement in the prevention of thoracic malignancies. Yang also is former president of National Taiwan University and served as director of the Advisory Office for the Ministry of Education for the Republic of China (Taiwan). His research focuses on lung cancer genomics, molecular mechanisms of cancer metastasis, and translational research of precision lung cancer therapy.
