Cleveland Clinic announces several oncology staff appointments

Four Cleveland Clinic oncology staff members have been appointed to new roles at Taussig Cancer Institute.

Nathan Pennell, MD, PhD, will become vice chair of clinical research.

Pennell joined Taussig Cancer Institute in 2008 and became director of Cleveland Clinic’s lung cancer medical oncology program in 2010.

Aaron Gerds, MD, MS
Aaron T. Gerds

Aaron T. Gerds, MD, will succeed Pennell as deputy director for clinical research. Gerds, a HemOnc Today Next Gen Innovator, serves as principal investigator for several clinical trials of treatments for myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Hetty Carraway, MD
Hetty Carraway

Hetty Carraway, MD, will become the cancer institute’s leukemia program director. She also is vice chair of strategy and enterprise development for the institute, as well as staff physician in its department of hematology and medical oncology.

Laura Shoemaker, DO, has been named chair of the palliative medicine department at Cleveland Clinic. Shoemaker previously served as interim department chair upon its founding earlier this year.

Three other clinicians have joined the oncology staff.

Ruth Keri, PhD, joined Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute’s department of cancer biology. Her research focus is breast cancer. Bahar Laderian, MD, joined Cleveland Clinic’s gastrointestinal cancer program, and Pradnya Patil, MD, joined the lung cancer program.
