Stephen Gruber, MD, PhD, MPH, has been appointed director of City of Hope’s newly founded Center for Precision Medicine.

Gruber, a medical oncologist and epidemiologist, will lead a team of more than a dozen researchers who will strive to develop personalized cancer treatment and prevention strategies.

He also will launch a Lynch Syndrome Center of Excellence.

Gruber is known for his expertise in the genetic epidemiology of cancer. Much of his research has focused on solid tumors.

“We will eventually be able to provide all City of Hope patients with insight about their genome so that the right treatment for their disease is chosen,” Gruber said in a press release. “The goal is to diagnose disease earlier when it’s more treatable and to treat patients with drugs that minimize or even cure their cancer rather than to prescribe ones that will have no effect on their specific tumor.”

Gruber previously served as director of USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as attending physician at the cancer center and Keck Hospital of USC.

“[Gruber’s] previous experience as director of a comprehensive cancer center and international authority in genomic medicine leaves no doubt in my mind that he is the right person to lead our collaborative efforts to provide patients with the most appropriate personalized cancer care,” Michael Caligiuri, MD, president of City of Hope National Medical Center and Deana and Steve Campbell physician-in-chief distinguished chair, said in the release.
