Eight important updates for National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is observed every September.

It is intended to educate men about prostate cancer risk factors, screening and treatment options.

In conjunction with this observance, Healio presents the following updates in prostate cancer research that may be relevant to your practice.

  • All men with metastatic prostate cancer should undergo genetic testing to better inform decisions on precision medicine or clinical trial eligibility, according to recommendations developed at a multidisciplinary consensus conference. Read more.
  • The FDA granted priority review to relugolix (Myovant Sciences) for treatment of men with advanced prostate cancer. Read more.
  • The addition of ipatasertib (Genentech/Roche) to standard therapy benefited certain men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Read more.
  • The addition of enzalutamide (Xtandi; Astellas, Pfizer) to androgen deprivation therapy significantly prolonged OS among men with nonmetastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Read more.
  • Incidence of regional and distant-stage prostate cancer has continued to increase among men aged 50 years and older in the United States, according to results of a retrospective study. Read more.
  • Researchers identified common biomarkers among men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who responded favorably to the CTLA-4 inhibitor ipilimumab (Yervoy, Bristol Myers Squibb). Read more.
