Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia named best hospital for pediatric cancer

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has been named the No. 1 children’s hospital for cancer in the country.
The institution tops U.S. News & World Report's list of best hospitals for pediatric cancer for 2020-2021.
The 14th annual Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are intended to help families of children with life-threatening or rare conditions obtain the best possible medical care.
The rankings highlight the top 50 centers in 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology.
Other centers named to the top 10 for cancer care this year are Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Children’s National Hospital, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
U.S. News & World Report also released its 2020-2021 Honor Roll, which recognizes pediatric centers that deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties.
Boston Children’s Hospital topped the honor roll for the seventh straight year, ranking first in four of the 10 specialties assessed: nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology.
Other institutions in the top five of the honor roll are Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings take into account objective measurements such as clinical outcomes — including infection rates and mortality — as well as compliance with best practices and available clinical resources.
RTI International, a research and consulting firm based in North Carolina, collected and analyzed data from children’s hospitals and also surveyed several thousand pediatric specialists. More than 100 pediatric specialists and other experts provided input through methodology working groups.
“Across our nation, health care professionals are striving against unprecedented challenges to provide the best possible care to each of their patients,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News, said in a press release. “The nurses, doctors and other professionals at the best children’s hospitals have demonstrated a track record of delivering top-notch care to children with diverse medical needs.”
