The AACR Academy provides advice to the association’s leadership on the timeliness and significance of scientific topics. Its responsibilities also include influencing public policy regarding important scientific issues, advocating for cancer research funding, mentoring early career cancer scientists, and educating the public about cancer and the importance of cancer research.

Sawyers’ research has focused on developing targeted anticancer therapies. His work has led to the development of imatinib for chronic myeloid leukemia, dasatinib (Sprycel, Bristol-Myers Squibb) for imatinib-resistant CML and enzalutamide (Xtandi; Astellas, Pfizer Oncology) for docetaxel-resistant metastatic prostate cancer.

In addition to being elected as a fellow to the AACR Academy in 2014, Sawyers served as AACR president from 2013 to 2014 and as a member of the board of directors from 2003 to 2006.
