Patients with breast cancer given personalized care sequence plans took more efficient and timely action on key activities such as primary care, testing and appointments, before receiving treatment or surgery compared with patients without care sequence plans, according to research presented during ASCO2020 Virtual Scientific Program.

Christine B. Weldon, MBA, director of the Center for Business Models in Healthcare and adjunct instructor of obstetrics and gynecology and medicine at Northwestern University, discussed the importance of care sequence plans — which help patients know what actions they should be taking and in what order — as a project management tool for patients and physicians in a video interview with Healio.

“Before surgery, it’s important if a patient has indicated that they might have a hereditary type of breast cancer, that they get testing before their breast surgery because it might change what surgery is done,” Weldon said. “In some cases, if they have a triple negative cancer, it might change the type of drug therapies they put on as well, so it’s something that we want to make sure is done in a timely fashion.”
